My journey as a builder didn’t start with a wood lathe or a chisel; it started on the living room floor with a bucket of Legos. Even as a child, I was transfixed by the magic of building—watching small, disconnected pieces gradually unite into a complex, cohesive structure. That early fascination deepened at my father’s side, watching him tackle home projects and learning firsthand the quiet pride that comes from a hard day of physical creation.
Today, my day job as an engineer exercises my passion for systematic problem-solving and macroeconomic blueprints. But the workshop provides something my computer screen never could: a visceral, tactile return to reality. Woodworking is the ultimate conversation between the maker and nature. Transforming raw, rough-sawn lumber through the jointer and planer into a glass-smooth board is uniquely satisfying, but the true thrill lies in the joinery. Machining can never replicate the absolute precision of hand-paring a razor-thin mortise or a cascading dovetail until two perfectly flat faces meet in a seamless, grain-matched joint.
Woodworking is a discipline that humbles the practitioner. Because wood is an organic, dynamic medium shaped by its environment, it defies absolute mastery. A board will always challenge you, moving and reacting to climate and blade, refusing to simply do what it is told. Every commission requires me to bring my analytical background to the bench, interpreting the unique characteristics of each domestic or exotic specimen to achieve structural perfection. We intentionally factor in weeks for newly milled lumber to rest and acclimate to the environment, and we grant full curing windows for every hand-applied layer of finish. To the untrained eye, our workshop floor might look chaotic—with specialized stations set up across different zones and multiple custom commissions in the queue. Yet, there is a distinct mathematical order to the madness. Every piece moves through a precise sequence engineered to yield an heirloom-quality outcome.
