The Custom Commission Experience
Catering to discerning collectors and high-end design enthusiasts, we reject mass production and high-volume timelines. Every commission is treated as an intentional, limited studio release—built one at a time with weeks of absolute focus dedicated to hand-cut joinery and hand-rubbed oil finishes.
We do not design to meet rushed deadlines; we design for longevity, structural stability, and artistic merit. When you collaborate with Grainline on a custom commission, you are investing in a serialized, one-of-one statement of craft built to outlast generations.
The Commission Journey
Step 1: The Initial Consultation & Alignment
Because our pieces are built one at a time on an intentional schedule, we are highly selective with the commissions we accept. We look for projects that offer an artistic connection—builds where our signature craftsmanship can truly bring your vision to life. Upon reviewing your inquiry, if there is a strong alignment, we will schedule a dedicated requirements session. Together, we will discuss the piece's intended use, its placement in your home, surrounding furniture aesthetics, and initial material concepts.
Step 2: Custom CAD Design & Rendering
Next, we develop a precise 3D CAD model to hone the proportions, shape, and engineering details. This phase allows us to map out complex joinery and generate an accurate material list. Depending on whether you have a strict vision or grant us creative freedom, this stage includes dedicated research and inspiration gathering.
Step 3: Material Selection & Schedule Placement
Alongside the 3D rendering, we will present our formal lumber and material recommendations. Once the design is officially signed off, 100% payment is required. This deposit secures your definitive placement on our build schedule and allows us to begin sourcing and conditioning the specific rough-sawn hardwoods for your piece. At this stage, we will provide an estimated build-window based on our current studio queue.
Step 4: The Art of the Build
This is where raw lumber is transformed. Because we believe the story of the piece is as important as the final product, you are invited to follow along with the creation of your commission via behind-the-scenes updates on our Instagram page.
To keep you informed without crowding your schedule, we track progress through five distinct, traditional woodworking milestones:
- Milling & Board Prep: Rough lumber is selected, milled flat, and broken down to final dimensions.
- Joinery & Panels: Meticulous hand-cut joinery (such as dovetails) and intricate components (like traditional basswood Kumiko panels) are meticulously crafted.
- Pre-Assembly & Fitting: Dry-fitting the framework, preparing custom accessories, internal lighting, or integrated drawers.
- The Glue-Up & Assembly: Final structural assembly and permanent execution of the joinery.
- Finishing & Detail: Hand-rubbed oil finishes are applied to highlight the natural grain, hardware is installed, and the piece is meticulously inspected for zero-defect execution.
Step 5: Delivery & Curation
The final step is safely transitioning the piece into your home. For small-to-medium statement pieces and jewelry chests, your item will be securely crated and shipped nationwide. For large-scale furniture and custom cabinetry, we currently offer local pickup or white-glove delivery within Northeast Ohio to guarantee the piece arrives in pristine condition.
Project Scope & Timeline Expectations
True craftsmanship cannot be rushed. Because our work is executed by a single pair of hands on an intentional studio schedule, timing is dictated strictly by structural stability and the artistic complexity of the build.
Estimated Build Timelines
While a concrete completion date is formally established once your design agreement is locked in, we operate under these standard baseline timelines (excluding transit/shipping time):
- Small Accent & Legacy Pieces: ~5 Weeks (e.g., fine jewelry chests, heirloom humidors).
- Meticulous Custom Cabinets: ~8 Weeks (e.g., wall-hanging whiskey cabinets, small tea cabinets). This timeline is primarily driven by the intricate layout, cutting, and hand-assembly of traditional basswood Kumiko panels.
What Impacts the Timeline?
- Material Conditioning: Hardwoods are a living medium. Once specialized rough lumber is acquired, it must acclimate to our workshop conditions for a set period before a blade ever touches it. This minimizes future wood movement, ensuring heirloom stability.
- Design Complexity: The density of traditional joinery and the scale/pattern density of Kumiko panels significantly alter the required shop hours.
Studio Scope & Specialization
To maintain a zero-defect standard of execution, our workshop is intentionally optimized for small-to-medium-scale art. We do not build large-scale furniture, floor-standing cabinetry, or large dining tables.
- Maximum Spatial Footprint: To give you a sense of scale, our custom wall-mounted whiskey cabinet represents the absolute maximum footprint our studio accommodates (approximately 2.5’ H x 1.5’ W x 6” D). Larger boards are not only difficult to source sustainably, but they often lack the dense, unique natural character found in highly selected smaller panels.
- Aesthetic Integrity: We specialize strictly in traditional woodworking and hand-rubbed oil finishes. We do not offer laser engraving, modern typography, or artificial personalizations, focusing instead on letting the joinery and the natural grain tell the story.
